Nøkken + The Grim

martes, 25 de diciembre de 2018

0014397807-10-1

Nøkken + The Grim is the call of ancient spirits for humankind to remember the forgotten song of nature, the animality, the beauty, the  brutality. It is music for the wild and untamed. Nøkken, the Norse spirit of horses and water, is joined by Ajatar, the Finnish dragoness, and Peryton, once the Magyar white stag, now black with soot.

The band has been featured on Brutal Resonance and has performed on Austin’s  Pagan Pride festival, Me Mer Mo Mondays sponsored by Self-Sabotage Records, and has recorded for several film scores under Brian  Satterwhite.  Nøkken (Justin Scheibel) is a soloist in the forthcoming horror film Sour Bear under composer Brian Satterwhite, host of KMFA 89.5's "Film Score Focus." Peryton (Stephen Ian Savage) is film composer and electronic artist who's score to the short-film "Where You Used to Be" recently premiered in Columbus, Ohio.

Nøkken + The Grim was formed in Austin, Texas in 2015. Their soundscapes evoke a time in which the human embodied its primal, animal nature. These wild spirits channel many styles of music and folkloric traditions into surreal and intense staging with costumes and animal masks, evocative of older shamanistic pathways and drawing heavily from Nøkken's Magyar and Germanic heritage.

Nøkken, in Norwegian folklore, is a water horse spirit and shapeshifter. In bygone times, the creature would lure trespassing humans to drown in rivers and lakes with seductive fiddling pulled from the heart of nature. Nøkken is joined by Peryton, The Black Stag on electronics and winds. Formerly the White Stag of Hungarian legend, his fur and feathers have turned black with the soot of modern industry. Now he seethes with the electronic pulse of technology. Ajatar, the Finnish witch of the woods, is the misunderstood mother of woodland spirits, thought to be a bringer of pestilence. Her form is that of a serpentine dragon, and she performs on viola. These shapeshifters of Norse and Magyar folklore have emerged from the forests and streams to perform animalistic, heathen music for human civilization at the brink of the ongoing war between our Mother Earth and human greed.

Einherjer

miércoles, 14 de noviembre de 2018

Founded in 1993, Einherjer's albums are heavily folk influenced, while others have a more traditional symphonic black metal sound. Their lyrics retell Norse legends, and each of their albums has its own theme. The band split up in early 2004 after releasing the album Blot in December 2003, but later reformed .

The word Einherjer is the modern Norwegian version of the Old Icelandic Einherjar meaning either"Those who fight alone" or "Those who belong to an army". According to both the Poetic and the Prose Edda, the Einherjar are prominent fighters who, upon their death on the battlefield, are brought to Valhalla by the Valkyries to feast and battle with each other until the coming of the final battle of the gods, Ragnarok.

Historically, the concept of Einherjar is thought to have been linked to Odinic beliefs and cults spawned sometimes during the late Heathen-period.

Aksel Herløe - lead guitars & vocals

Liholesie (Лихолесье) - Fables (2018)

jueves, 24 de mayo de 2018

Here another great band that in the month of April released a new EP entitled 'Fables' that will take them with their music to a world of myths and rituals

Fables is distant echoes of ancient myths and rituals. Fables is music, that traveler hears in the songs of forest birds, in the howl of the northern wind, in the creaking of branches, in the silence of a starry night and in the sound of his own heart. Fables is dreams and visions that we will forget after awakening, but will remember at the last moment…

HUGSJÁ

jueves, 19 de abril de 2018

After the success of their previous collaboration "Skuggsjá"; Ivar Bjørnson (Enslaved) and Einar Selvik (Wardruna) are now following up with an imposing new piece entitled "Hugsjá". The word 'Hugsjá' means to see with, or within, the mind - and it reflects the idea that one's mind has the potential to see further than the eyes can reach. By weaving together indigenous and contemporary thoughts, sounds and instruments, they are inviting you on a vivid journey - exploring the distant history and traditions along coastal Norway.

Hugsjá was first commissioned by, and performed at, Bergen International Festival in 2017, as part a series of concerts named Nordvegen ("the northern road"); inspired by local history and traditions in each of the places visited. Ultimately the material was recorded and became this full-length album.

Greenland Whalefishers

domingo, 7 de enero de 2018

Greenland Whalefishers started out in Bergen Norway in 1994, long before anyone had heard of bands like Flogging Molly or Dropkick Murphys. Combining british punk with celtic folk influences, the band soon became one of the most interesting post-pogues bands .

More than two decades of touring all around the world performing sparkling live shows, releasing nine full length albums, DVD documentary movie, piles of singles, EPs and split-releases, contributing with music to the movie “Boondock Saints – All Saints Day”, places the underground folk punkers in Greenland Whalefishers as one of the worlds most credible celtic rock bands.

Greenland Whalefishers’ album “SONGS FROM the BUNKER” was rated to a fifth place by Shite N’ Onions on the list over the best Celtic Punk CDs in 2010.  Shite N’ Onions also placed Greenland Whalefishers’ album “Loboville” on their list of the “10 BEST CELTIC PUNK ALBUMS EVER”, above artists like Dropkick Murphys and Shane MacGowan.

In 2014 the band celebrated their 20th anniversary.
As a part of the celebration Greenland whalefishers released the documentary movie “20 Years Of Waiting” covering the entire history of the band. The movie gained fantastic reviews:
“all was answered and more by this amazing Rockumentary celebrating 20 years of one of the greatest Paddy Punk bands in the world ever.”

Greenland Whalefishers have toured in the USA, Japan, England, Germany, Italy, Scotland, Poland, Czeck Republic, The Netherlands, Belgium etc, and will continue touring all over with more power and energy than ever on what may be called their never ending world tour. It is all this hard work and all the experience touring that has made critics applaud the bands albums and concerts saying;
” this is probably one of the best Celtic Punk bands you will ever see perform live

Nodfyr

viernes, 22 de diciembre de 2017

Foundations for :NODFYR: were laid by Joris and Niels in 2011, fueled by a desire to make heathen metal inspired by the folklore, mythology and nature of their native Gelderland. Nodfyr is the name of a pagan Germanic practice of fire making, mentioned in the 8th century Indiculus superstitionum et paganiarum. Nodfyr is one of the oldest (proto-) Dutch words.

Early versions of songs were recorded with the help of violin player Irma and after Niels went on to pursue other goals in 2014 Jasper and Mark joined in 2015. Due to their involvement in various other music endeavors (Heidevolk, Wederganger, Alvenrad) the two songs for their first release were finished in the summer of 2017.

Leidungr

LEIDUNGR is a Nordic Ritual Folk project. The latest album "Nordiska Hymner" is released by Trutzburg Thule 2017. The lyrical concept of "Nordiska Hymner" is a philosophical presentation of ancient myths and spirituality of northern Europe.

Step into the realms of LEIDUNGR once again in a mindset of meditation and embrace the heritage granted to those who possess the necessary traits by ancient forces and currents, made into something sinister through the passage of time.

The debut album, “De Nio Kraftsångerna”, was released by Equilibrium Music 2013

Crafted by weaving ritual elements into traditional folk, LEIDUNGR‘s mesmerizing work is also imbued with an indelible martial aura which reinforces the underlying heroic mood summoned on these recordings. The potent and evocative combination, which spreads across various genres, often re-creating their common formats, allows LEIDUNGR to carve their unique brand of Nordic Ritual Folk – a term which perfectly defines the genuine atmosphere of their long awaited debut album.

Although its inception can arguably be traced back to ARDITI‘s “Statues of Gods” release (10” EP 2009, Equilibrium Music), LEIDUNGR quickly grew into a unique separate entity. Visual assistance was found in Freki Wodenswolf, a talented artist known his unique handcrafted creations, made from natural materials as leather, wood, horn, bone and metal. Perfectly in tune with the project’s inspiration and Nordic roots, Freki has provided much of the artwork that accompanies LEIDUNGR‘s outputs. The band made their debut via the limited edition “Hell Eder Asar” 7″ EP, released on Fronte Nordico in 2011, which quickly started to build anticipation surrounding the release of a full album. “De Nio Kraftsångerna” is the name of the debut album, released in February 2013 via Equilibrium Music on matt varnished Digipak CD with copper printing.

Second album "Nordiska Hymner" was released 2017 by Trutzburg Thule. The lyrical concept of "Nordiska Hymner" is a philosophical presentation of ancient myths and spirituality of northern Europe.
LEIDUNGR represent the few but strong, those never enslaved by any way of inferior thoughts.
Through the music created by LEIDUNGR you will be able to come in contact with your own inner ancient Warrior Spirit.
Step into the realms of LEIDUNGR once again in a mindset of meditation and embrace the heritage granted to those who possess the necessary traits by ancient forces and currents, made into something sinister through the passage of time.

Songs from the heart of nature, inspiration from the depth of the soul

I have been working with heathen folk music since 2006 for my project Eliwagar. I have always been inspired by nature and the heathen spirituality which reflects a lot in the lyrics. With the side project "Runahild" I wish to come even closer to a natural soundscape. I came to a point when most of the primal ideas are based on old instruments, instead of guitar, which is bringing an other kind of energy flow. While I was often dreaming myself away with Eliwagar, picturing ancient worlds and lands, my new songs are rooted in the nature spirituality experienced in this life.

The intention and purpose of the musicians has always been to try to catch the atmosphere and the feeling of Norse mythology, combined with the intensity of the northern folk themes mixed with the metal. Sparks and embers from Muspell were installed in mid-Ginnungagap to give light to Midgard. They became stars, pointing the way ...

The Dutch folk metal band Jötnar started in 2008 writing about the quintessential folk themes: the Gods of old, Viking lore and ancient wars inspired Jötnars songs. In more recent years Jötnar has chosen not to limit themselves to just these themes. Writing songs about both the serious and outlandish, they fused different styles in their music while still staying faithful to their folk metal roots.

Valravn

With the second album ”Koder på snor” (2009), Valravn took new steps towards an even more personal music, which is true to its Nordic roots but is equally a child of the present and the future.

Edgy, atmospheric and deliciously fearless, Valravn drags the listener on a mental and musical journey over sweeping forests and deep into moody waters. The result is strange and wonderful, intensely outlandish and utterly hypnotic.

On the album as much as live, the charismatic Faroe Islands singer Anna Katrin Egilstrøð is the narrative heart of Valravn - with a rare and very efficient dynamic, she moves from storm to stillness with the natural ease of the sea rising with the tide.
Transforming the traditional into the extraordinary, Valravn finds an edgy drama that is just downright fierce, painting a landscape that is thoroughly modern but with ancient callings.
A stunning, headlong leap into folktronica.

"In summer 2013 we played the final concerts of a long and amazing journey which has been the 8 years of Valravn. We have travelled to 20 countries with our music, playing over 300 shows in clubs, at festivals, in schools, at markets, in theatres, in the streets, in castles, on the mountainside and in the woods…
We have met so many great and inspiring people along the way, from sister bands to our beloved audience, from professional crews to crazy freaks. We are deeply grateful for having had the opportunity to share Valravn with you."
