Datura medieval music

domingo, 23 de octubre de 2016

Francesco Scafidi, Lies Sommer, Tom Haage and Nynke Glazema are together the band Datura. We work for more than ten years now as medieval musicians and have played in many castles, joustig events, medieval village parties, openings, direction dinners, archeological presentations, ceremonies, weddings, gothic- folk- and fantasy festivals in the Netherlands and abroad. Once even in a swimming pool.

The band name Datura comes from the beautiful datura plant, also called 'angels trumpeth.

The datura was used in former times to come in the clouds.

Already in the early Middle Ages knew German herbal females (Hexen), a spread made from datura, belladonna and dried toads you could float through the air.

The best effect was obtained by applying these green fly ointment on the tip of a broomstick

Greenrose Faire

domingo, 16 de octubre de 2016

Greenrose Faire plays rousing Celtic folk rock with head-bobbing, toe-tapping rock feel. The Finnish sextet meshes mandolins and violin with rock drums and bass and symphonic synths, and spikes the rollicking attitude with the slightly ominous overtones of Finnish melancholy. Greenrose Faire sounds lively and modern but still tugs at the nostalgia strings for the long-gone days of yore.

Greenrose Faire plays jaunty folk rock, taking you on a journey to a world of ancient woods and solitary beaches as well as lively village markets and rowdy taverns.

The band has great fun on stage, and have played everywhere from corner pubs to concert halls, and from intimate weddings to international festivals, among others Elfia in The Netherlands (with e.g. Rapalje and Harmony Glen) and the Häme Medieval Fair six years in a row (with e.g. Värttinä and Korpiklaani) They also host an annual two-day Medieval Folk Festival of their own in Tampere.

The musicians of Rapalje with their wild hair and medieval kilts create flaming energy with their enthusiasm and motivation. The Mediaeval Baebes

sábado, 15 de octubre de 2016

The Mediaeval Baebes exquisite storybook opened its pages in 1996 when a group of friends broke into a North London cemetery and sang together, clad in flowing white gowns and crowns of Ivy.

Conceptualised by Katharine Blake, formally of Miranda Sex Garden, the initial idea of getting a few friends together to sing for fun quickly escalated into the many headed beast and epic adventure that is this most unique of musical ensembles.

Sourcing lyrics from mediaeval and romantic texts and setting them to original scores using mediaeval and folk instruments, whilst singing in an impressive array of obscure and ancient languages, the Baebes offered a beguiling musical beauty and outstanding talent. Their choice of mediaeval texts were mythological, philosophical and dark in topic meditating upon the inevitability of death, the pointlessness of material possessions, the agony of unrequited love or the dangers of imbibing too much alcohol! Some themes are timeless!

Seventeen years and many incarnations later, these fair maidens have placed three albums into the top of the classical charts and contributed to the BBC production of The Virgin Queen which resulted in an Ivor Novello Award 2007 for best television soundtrack.

The Mediaeval Baebes have performed before awe-struckaudiences in the UK, United States, Canada, Asia and Europe in venues ranging from castles and caves to nightclubs and cathedrals. They have toured with Jools Holland and played at the Royal Albert Hall, Carnglaze Caverns in Cornwall, Jersey Opera House, Tewkesbury Abbey, supported Michael Flatley in Hyde Park, and performed at the legendary Lilith Fayre.
Their most recent album “Of Kings and Angels” showcases a celestial collection of Christmas Carols innovatively arranged for your seasonal delight …

Anilah

viernes, 14 de octubre de 2016

Anilah is the solo project of vocalist and composer Dréa Drury, a musician based in the Selkirk Mountains of Western Canada. Her inspirations draw from traditional shamanic sound practices, sacred chant, dark tribal, and Indian Classical.

She has studied the art of using the voice as a healing modality with gifted teachers such as Ali Akbar Khan, Shweta Jhaveri, and Silvia Nakkach. This has led to her own exploration of the esoteric application of sound, as well as psychoacoustic engineering, which she now weaves into the tapestry of her musical expression.

She approaches her voice and composition as practices which are deeply integrated with the remote landscapes where she was raised. Her love for nature, wildness, and the world of the elements inspires her to write music which directly reflects their essence. Weaving a soundscape that is ethereal, haunting, and ancient, Dréa's intention is to create music which aids in cathartic and transformative experience. To her, music is medicine.

She acknowledges her relationship to nature, silence, and moments of complete sensory absorption - to be her primary teachers.
