MOONLOOM - a young folk group from Moscow, combining in its work as the beauty of medieval ballads, and all the power and epic nature of the Scandinavian tunes, and like the phases of the moon illuminates the ancient pagan cultures of different peoples. The repertoire of the group includes songs in different languages: Russian, Old Norse, Romanian, German, Middle High German, Spanish, Old Icelandic, Lower Saxon, Latin, Finnish, Sephardic, Gallic (dead) and some other languages.
Here is a great recommendation of an album that came out in December 2017 from the band An Danzza without a doubt a great album full of Folk, Celtic Folk that will brighten the day with its melodies and accompanied by a good wine
Andrés Campuzano's first compositions, recorded, arranged and produced 15 years later. Finally it sees the light in Yule 2017. This extended play consists of a single song of 30 minutes duration. This time the style is Celtic fusion, with an unbridled, crazy and cheerful touch.
Out of the deep forest, majestic beings come forward to meet men. Playful, seductive, sometimes disturbing, these legendary creatures are the result of the work of the company Tan Elleil, which transmits in our way our ancestral memory "(Keltia Magazine)
It is in the Celtic, Scandinavian and Breton imagination that, since 2008, the Coy Tan Elleil draws its inspiration. Mixing with poetry street arts (music, stilts, dances, fire, puppet ...) and crafts, the Company invites you to discover its unique and intriguing universe.
Always accompanied by a music seeming out of forgotten and forgotten ages, the Compagnie Tan Elleil takes you to the tenuous border between dream, reality and immortal legends.
During the year 2012, the first compositions of Heimsgard are born, forged cold by the impulses of inspiration of Raido. Satisfied with his work still fragmenting, he reaped the fruits of his inspiration left to decant and allowed to improve all ideas until maturation. It is only in 2014 that the name of Heimsgard will adorn the label of its future first vintage: "Ordrag", which will be bottled at the autumnal equinox 2015. Shaped with the hammer of Thor, decked with melodies epic and folk, racy but with hints of paganism and Scandinavian folklore, Heimsgard offers a pagan / folk metal powerful and easygoing. The moorings are dropped and the Heimsgard raids are just beginning.
With the second album ”Koder på snor” (2009), Valravn took new steps towards an even more personal music, which is true to its Nordic roots but is equally a child of the present and the future.
Edgy, atmospheric and deliciously fearless, Valravn drags the listener on a mental and musical journey over sweeping forests and deep into moody waters. The result is strange and wonderful, intensely outlandish and utterly hypnotic.
On the album as much as live, the charismatic Faroe Islands singer Anna Katrin Egilstrøð is the narrative heart of Valravn - with a rare and very efficient dynamic, she moves from storm to stillness with the natural ease of the sea rising with the tide.
Transforming the traditional into the extraordinary, Valravn finds an edgy drama that is just downright fierce, painting a landscape that is thoroughly modern but with ancient callings.
A stunning, headlong leap into folktronica.
"In summer 2013 we played the final concerts of a long and amazing journey which has been the 8 years of Valravn. We have travelled to 20 countries with our music, playing over 300 shows in clubs, at festivals, in schools, at markets, in theatres, in the streets, in castles, on the mountainside and in the woods…
We have met so many great and inspiring people along the way, from sister bands to our beloved audience, from professional crews to crazy freaks. We are deeply grateful for having had the opportunity to share Valravn with you."

Since it’s birth in 2012, Forndom has been a multi-project consisting of art and atmospheres from the ancient Sudermannia plains, filled with rune stones, mound hills and dark forests. With the sound of ambient choirs, folk melodies and lyrical themes consisting of Norse religion and folklore, the man behind the project, L. Swärd, takes us on a journey back in time when humanity lived far more close to nature and it’s gods. Forndom is more than just a simple art-project. It is also the philosophy of L.Swärd and how he looks upon the world. A world filled with melancholy for the lost connection with nature. But also hope for that we one day will find our lost wisdom.
Experience an ambiance of Old Norse music, with five experienced musicians from the Danish music scene in the electronic folk project "Asynje".
Inspired by Scandinavian folk music, deep forests and ancient times, Asynje creates beautiful soundscapes and energetic dance numbers. It's the sound of mulch and Nordic urtone created with rarely seen instruments blend with contemporary electronic samples and Nanna Barslevs enchanting voice.
The lyrics are inspired by pagan roots and some lyrics are taken from nordic mythology and old wich spells.
Band members:
Nanna Barslev - vocal and lyrics, davul, bodhran
Nanna is also singer in Gny og Huldre.
Martin Seeberg - bratsch, violin, flutes, lyre, jawsharp, percussion etc.
Martin also plays in Sorten Muld, Instinkt, Virelai and former member of Valravn.
Lunar Womb
was a ambient/ folk/ electronic project of me started in 1995 with a couple of
friends. After the first demo I continued alone and released another demo in
1997. In 1998 I got myself some better musical equipment to fulfill my visions
and this cassette demo was planned to release in the turn of 1998/1999.
Due to
other band- related things, It took me some time to finish it properly but when
it was finally ready I felt it was so outdated I didn´t want to release it
anymore.
I found the
tracks and the layout- files from my backups in 2015 and after careful
reconsideration I decided to finish what I had once started and remastered it
from the original pieces. All the artwork and layout was originally intended
for a cassette release and the music is 100% original except for remastering
for a bit more better listening experience.
This
release is an important part of my musical history and in a way can be
considered the only "solo album" I have ever done- and probably ever
will. It can also be found from various places in the internet for free
listening or to download but due to numerous requests I am also putting it to
bandcamp as lossless files.
I hope the
atmosphere and the burning passion and longing for something ancient I was
intending to create back then can still be heard over 15 years later.
Electro-acoustic

emphasizing their signature passionate rhythms and eastern melodies with

Evolving for over a decade of recording and performing, Stellamara unites
world-renowned musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds in a shared devotion
for folk and classical music rooted in Near Eastern, Eastern European, Medieval
European, Arabic and Persian traditions. Stellamara is regarded as being at the
forefront of contemporary world music, giving new life and a fresh, modern
expression to the beautiful and mysterious qualities of traditional modal
music.
At
Stellamara’s core is vocalist and producer Sonja Drakulich and
multi-instrumentalist Gari Hegedus. Their ensemble includes an all-star cast of
musicians: percussionist, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist: Evan Fraser,
percussionist: Sean Tergis, and their newest member, accordionist, vocalist,
programmer / keyboardist: Dan Cantrell
…………………
Stellamara
began when vocalist / producer Sonja Drakulich created a vehicle for the
development of devotional music based in Near Eastern and medieval modal
traditions. Extraordinary musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds have
since come together within the vessel of Stellamara, creating music with a
common intention: to celebrate love, beauty and unity through transcendent
harmony and passionate rhythms. Rooted in Turkish, Arabic, Balkan, Medieval
European and Persian musical traditions, Stellamara carries a deep devotion to
the music of these cultures with a unique timeless expression. As an actively
touring ensemble, they are internationally regarded as being at the forefront
of contemporary world music, giving new life and a fresh, modern expression to
the beautiful and mysterious qualities of traditional modal music.
Stellamara’s
founder and Producer, Sonja Drakulich, was born of Serbian and Hungarian decent
and raised in Los Angeles. She sought out the study of Eastern European singing
on her own as a young girl, and its expression quickly became, for her, a
homecoming. She began performing Balkan and Medieval European music as well as
her own compositions at the age of 18. At that time she also began her studies in
classical Hindustani and Persian singing, and later continued to expand her
voice through Turkish, Greek and Arabic singing. She was adopted as protégé by
the legendary Bulgarian vocalist Tatiana Sarbinska at the age of 20, and
continued her studies with both Tatiana and the renowned Bulgarian vocalist
Tsvetanka Varimezova. She has toured with the Mevlevi Dervishes as a singer and
percussionist and has provided music for Sufi gatherings and devotional events
around the country. She toured Indonesia in 2006 as part of the Gamelan theater
group, Situbanda, where she performed a lead role in a contemporary rendition
the Ramayana. Her voice and music can be heard in many independent films and
she has been sought after by composers, producers re-mixers, as well as the
extraordinary Cirque du Soloeil, for lead roles in their productions.
Throughout her successes as performer and producer, and throughout her
continued studies, Sonja has maintained a voice that is unique, reverent and
exquisite. She is not confined by any one tradition, and uses her voice with
the freedom of a soaring musical instrument. In her voice, one can hear her
center residing in the devotional aspect of song, as she carries within her a
signature passionate and rhythmic style, graced with the delicate
ornamentations of Eastern melody.
Gari
Hegedus began devoting his life to music with the study of Celtic and Bretagne
music. From there he was led eastward into the intense practice and performance
of Turkish classical and Mevlevi ceremonial music and he toured with the
Mevlevi Dervish Order of America for several years. Gari is widely sought after
as a highly accomplished and versatile recording and performing artist. His
repertoire and playing styles reach outward from Turkey and Greece into the
Arab lands, Iran and India. Gari began his musical career with fiddle and
mandolin, and had devoted a decade of his life to the violin before learning of
his ancestral Hungarian name, Hegedus, meaning “violinist.” Gari’s main
instruments are the oud, violin, saz and mandocello, yet his talent is also
proficiently expressed on many other instruments, including the yayli tanbur,
sarod and setar. Being largely self taught, with an insatiable drive for the
discovery of new depths and intricacies of playing, he asserts a distinctive
talent for capturing the delicate essence of traditional music, offering a
passionate, heartfelt uniqueness and freedom of expression. As a composer and
performer, Gari has developed the art of taksim (improvisation) to a deeply soulful
level for which he has become highly recognized. He is co-founder of the
beautiful musical duo “Teslim” with violinist and composer, Kaila Flexer.

The name Folk Noir invokes a collection of images coming from an Era of the past. A time of poets and writers, inspirations from the Occult and new views on the World we live in. A world with dark bohemian magic and various Arts. Folk Noir, the band collects these images and blends them into a new kind of dark folk music.
Folk Noir performs music with the use of (English) multi layered vocals, various medieval folk instruments, aswell as modern influences.
With their self written lyrics in English and translucent storylines Folk Noir brings a new dimension to alternative music, in which they evoke a darker kind of folk...
Folk Noir started out as a two person project between Oliver s.Tyr of FAUN and Kaat Geevers of L.E.A.F.
In 2012 Stephan Groth (FAUN) and Alex Schulz have joined this project to grow into a full-four-member band.
Meanwhile in 2013 they have developed into a respectable liveband which combines fragility with a powerful festivalshow.
In the end of 2014 they had a lineup change. Co-founder Kaat Geevers will now more focus on her band L.E.A.F. and Livy Pear joined the band. She enriches Folk Noir with her amazing voice and is going to play additional guitar and piano.

Who listen to their music discovers his deepest ego, archaic feelings lost long time before, bringing back to the ancestral harmony with the universe and the entire Human race.
EMIAN PaganFolk formed in 21th December 2011 (Yule, the winter solstice). Their folk express an adhesion to ancestral lifestyle, far from contemporary bustle and close to ancient and natural values.

Kati Ran | L.E.A.F performs on historical and mediëval instruments and combines ancient scandinavian poetry, self written lyrics and traditional folk melodies to create the captivating subgenre 'Nordic Folk'.
Music can
be considered one of the strongest ways to communicate with one another on an
intimate and personal level. Music created from deep within can transmit
pure feeling and universal emotions. Therefore, music is a reminder that we are
a part of Nature; it may cause the listener to wake up and see the beauty of
the dream called Life.
Fascinated by these phenomena Kati Ran learned to create,
step by step, her own music and capture the melodies coming from within.
Together with Fieke van den Hurk they gave shape and form to the birth of the
Nordic Folk band 'LEAF' back in 2010.
L.E.A.F plays on a variety of historical and medieval folk
instruments, such as the Swedish nyckelharpa, Celtic Harp, hammered dulcimer,
acoustic guitar and Irish bouzouki, Kraviklyra, overtone flutes, shamanic
drums, rattles, Finnish kantele and more.
The combination of warm traditional folkmelodies, ritual and
poetic texts, multi layered vocals and powerful shamanistic influences makes
L.E.A.F today a well loved, Nordic folk band of this moment, in which their
Scandinavian musical influence creates a new subgenre with the known Folk scene
in Europe.
"From the start it has been our intention
to make music that carries the power to reconnect people to history and to each
other, while sounding fresh and pure as Nature itself. A leaf is one of the
strongest symbols to represent Nature as a whole. The name of the band is a
strong and poetic choice and, like the music; a reminder of our origin." -
Kati Ran
Right away this track opens the album with Kati’s clear and warm voice. The song sounds like an intro, a promise for the rest of the album. The lyrics of the song are by Kati, but with components from Atlamal and Gripisspa, two of the Eddic poems, immediately showing that this album is more than “just music”.
Track 2: Sol
Sol means ‘Sun’, which as the booklet explains has always been very important. The song to me is about man’s journey through time. Like the previous song the lyrics are written by Kati, but this time it contains verses of the poem ‘Let the Light Enter” by Frances Ellen Watkins Harper. The music starts off simple, but more and more layers get added as the song progresses, which to me can represent not only the seasons of the year, caused of course by the sun, but this can also symbolise life, as it starts off simple but as we grow older we add more and more complexities to life.
Track 3: Ran
The start of this song feels deeply spiritual. When the percussion comes in it provides a lot of depth in the sound and slowly but surely it grows into a song with quite a massive presence. Ran is the Goddess of the sea but also Kati’s stage name.
Track 4: Terveh
Our first ever Monthly Marker and it has been a part of our playlist ever-since. Terveh is a song in an old Finnish language from the Karelian area, and it’s an old Scandinavian rite to contact and communicate with the spirits of the neighbouring forests. As far as the music goes it does have more of a “modern” feel than what you would expect of something so ancient. The hand of Christoffer Juul (Valravn, EUZEN, LAVA studios) is clear in this song. Powerful in the low end, very melodic in the vocals.
Track 5: Harpa Toner
A traditional Norwegian song, and as we may expect from the older European fairytales, death plays a rather large part in it. The song is a story about a girl gets killed by her older sister, so that the older sister can then marry the lover of the dead sister. However, the bones and hair of the young sister are used to create a harp, which then plays at the wedding and sings the truth. Musically a very layered track, with a clear and sharply defined high end and some deep dark lows, combining to a very complete song. Highly enjoyable, if you can forget the murder and body parts
Track 6: Nymanen
A remake of Under Nymanen from L.E.A.F.’s earlier EP. This was my personal favourite then, and the song that made me fall madly in love with the vocal quality of Kati Ran, and so I’m happy that this song was selected for a remake. I can say that the song hasn’t changed an awful lot fortunately, we can just hear that it has matured and has become somewhat more powerful.
Track 7: Vinda
A very laid-back type of song. Slower, with a dreamy quality, it makes you want to close your eyes and just drift off. The song was written by Maria Franz (Euzen) when she was only fourteen, and indeed Maria sings this song as a duet with Kati. I don’t speak Danish, so I can’t really attest to that, but the English translation certainly does have a very poetic feel to it!
Track 8: Fylgja
The title of this song is in Old Norse and the lyrics in German, which would then make the 4th or 5th language on the album, none of which are Kati’s native tongue. If nothing else this emphasizes the international aspect of this album. The song takes the listener deep into a dream-state, with a very nice continuous rhythm and heavy reverb on Kati’s soothing vocals.
Track 9: Suurin
Suurin is another traditional rite from Finland, and the shamanistic properties of the song are evident from the start. Strong drums and a powerful chant, and the power just keeps building up during the song. Even though the song itself doesn’t reach a clear climax, I can certainly envision people reaching a level of ecstasy from this song when performed or played in the right circumstances.
Track 10: LYS
LYS starts off as a Galdr, an ancient form of song intended to conjure magic. I have been fortunate enough to have seen this song performed live on stage at Castlefest during the combined L.E.A.F./SeeD show, and it certainly felt magical! What a sense of power coming from that stage! And I will admit, even the recorded version gives a similar power, which is not often the case. From start to finish this track speaks to the primal part in my soul with the carefully crafted Galdr text and the massive power from the rhythm.
